AI Guidance for Use

The Ellensburg School District supports the responsible use of AI tools by students, teachers, and employees. These guidelines outline expectations for various stakeholders:

Staff AI Use

 

Students:

  • Always consult with your teacher before using AI tools to ensure proper usage
  • Do not enter personal or copyrighted information into AI tools
  • Keep a record of AI prompts and outputs for transparency
  • Verify AI-generated content for accuracy and appropriateness
  • Cite AI-generated content properly using established formats (e.g. MLA, APA etc)
  • AI should be used as a thought partner, coach, and/or critic
  • AI should not be used to do the thinking for you and provide answers you’ve been asked to generate on your own

 

 

 

Teachers:

  • Choose AI tools critically, being aware of potential biases in their design and application When using them with students, ensure they are district-approved applications
  • Train students to recognize bias in AI-generated content and encourage them to provide feedback on their experience
  • Clearly communicate expectations regarding AI use in the classroom, including any that are specific to your department and/or content (see “Stoplight AI Procedures").
  • Provide age- and grade-appropriate opportunities for students to gain AI literacy skills and knowledge
  • Review AI-generated content for accuracy, bias, or inappropriate material
  • Provide guidance on how students should properly attribute AI-generated work
  • Recognize that AI tools for detecting plagiarism are not fully reliable and should not be the sole method for identifying plagiarism.

 

All Employees:

  • Collaborate with peers when using AI tools in a school or work environment
  • Do not input private, confidential, or copyrighted information into AI tools
  • Always read and verify AI-generated content before using it in district operations

District:

  • Monitor AI use in the district, setting guidelines for appropriate usage and testing AI tools before integrating them into the system on a large scale
  • Gather feedback from students and parents to ensure AI is being used effectively and ethically
  • Provide tools that ensure equitable access for students, student data privacy, and support for teachers

 

 

 

Stoplight AI procedures

As part of the teacher guidelines to ‘clearly communicate expectations regarding AI use in the classroom, including those specific to your department or content area,’ teachers are expected to implement the stoplight approach for graded assignments. Read more here.
